covid19 & persons with disabilities

It started with me posing this question on social media => Guys. Some people have been left behind. What shall we do about this part of our community? #covid-19

Here came views and some solutions. Will keep curating and updating the responses, [and perhaps pick up ideas for innovating a welfare &advocacy program for vulnerable and marginalised communities in the creative economy. ]
Danceintospace Dis Good question….very many issues to be addressed when it comes to minding them during this time…not even the disability caucus or the national council is saying anything. The general guidelines being given like osha mkono, sneeze kwa elbows etc are not practical for PWDs. Mwalimu GT what messages should we generate now for PWDs to stay safe.? #ThinkingNow
Ochieng Odhyambo For handwashing, most of the publicly installed facilities I have seen are accessible to even children. About touching surfaces, that calls on us to go out of our way..
Terry Nyoro Marley It is mostly left to family members to figure it out, example you receive 2k per month, what do you do first, see a doctor, see a therapist, how many appointments can that cover, do you buy clothes, food, shelter? Most of the infrastructure, transportation doesn’t meet the requirements for comfort. Many many issues not addressed or if addressed they’ve not been acted upon.
Phina Munene Let’s ask all who the current guidelines are not meeting specific needs, what would work…
Bahati Pascal Us wanaichi and PWDs stakeholders put forth measures to enable our brothers and sisters to be safe from Covid-19 .We can be PWDs keepers and it can go along way in keeping all of us safe from Covid-19
Phina Munene Let’s ask all who the current guidelines are not meeting specific needs, what would work…
Cobz Kioo Cha Jamii It seems its as Terry Nyoro opines above. Sad that even the national established organs have been mum about this and not even saying anything about sensitivity to PWD
George Barasa Let’s not even go far. Our supermarket are not disability friendly. While everyone rush to stock food so they can stay indoor, people living with disabilities can’t reach essentials on top shelves
The, all of a sudden, came a positive solution – from this girl who made something together with the mother

“I felt like there was a huge population that was being looked over,” Lawrence said. “We’re all panicking right now and so a lot of people are just not being thought of. So, I felt like it was very important that, even at a time like this, people need to have that communication.”
